Legacy Gifts

First, thank you for taking the time to read about Tender Nursing Care and the service we deliver to local people and their families in our community at a most challenging time in their lives. Our service is free, but of course we do need to raise funds to enable us to continue this vital work. We are fortunate to receive some grant funding through the NHS for which we are very grateful, but this represents less than half of what we need each year. The rest must come from running fundraising events throughout the year, from grant applications to other external bodies and from generous donations from local individuals and community groups. Because of inflation and the increasing pressures on NHS budgets the amount we must raise through our own efforts has become higher and higher with each passing year. The need for our help is ongoing and there are always more people who would benefit from our help than our resources will allow.

One of the most important ways the large national charities raise funds is through the receipt of gifts or bequests from Wills. As an example, the British Heart Foundation say that they receive over half of their funds by such donations.

They are rightly able to maintain a very high profile with the public. Tender Nursing Care is a small local charity, and we do not have a ‘marketing’ department like the national charities do so we are not able to maintain such a high profile. But the benefit of being small is that our Trustees and fund-raising volunteers all provide their time at no cost and we do not have the cost of a senior management team or a large marketing team. This means that our financial overheads are negligible compared to the national charities and almost every pound we spend goes into funding delivery of our care service.

If you could take a few minutes just to consider a gift to TNC in your Will we would be enormously grateful. Detailed below are the kind of gifts which can be included in a Will.

A pecuniary gift

This is a ‘cash gift’ – a specific amount of money given in a Will. To include this kind of gift, you could use this wording:

‘I give to Tender Nursing Care of The Ryan Medical Centre, St Mary’s Road, Bamber Bridge, Preston, PR5 6JD, registered charity number 1154186 the sum of [£specify words and figures] free of tax for its general charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer of Tender Nursing Care for the time being shall be a sufficient discharge to my executors.’

A residuary gift

This is a share of your estate. This means it’s not a fixed amount and should keep its value, unaffected by inflation. To include a residuary gift, you could use this wording:

‘I give to Tender Nursing Care of The Ryan Medical Centre, St Mary’s Road, Bamber Bridge, Preston, PR5 6JD, registered charity number 1154186 [all / __%] of the residue of my estate absolutely for its general charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer of Tender Nursing Care for the time being shall be a sufficient discharge to my executors.’

Specific

This is an item like jewellery, stocks and shares or property. To include a specific gift, you could use this wording:

‘I give to Tender Nursing Care of The Ryan Medical Centre, St Mary’s Road, Bamber Bridge, Preston, PR5 6JD, registered charity number 1154186 [name and description of item] absolutely for its general charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer of Tender Nursing Care for the time being shall be a sufficient discharge to my executors.’

Inheritance Tax

Because Tender Nursing Care is a charity, most gifts to us are exempt from Inheritance Tax. You can find out about other charitable tax benefits by visiting HMRC at: gov.uk/browse/tax inheritance-tax or by asking a solicitor.

We suggest you use a solicitor or Will-writer, though it is not essential. However, you should have a legal expert check your Will to make sure that it is valid and legal.

If you have any questions for us please do get in touch, either by email to office@tnc.org.uk or by calling 07897 199101 during normal office hours Monday to Friday.

Thank you once again for thinking about Tender Nursing Care.
